Diljit Dosanjh
The Man, The Music, The Journey

The Journey of a Cultural Icon, from his humble beginings to global stardum

Early Life

Diljit Dosanjh was born on January 6, 1984, in the
charming village of Dosanjh Kalan, located in the
Phillaur tehsil of Jalandhar district, Punjab.
Originally named Daljit Singh, he later changed his
name to Diljit Dosanjh on the advice of Rajindra
Singh, a producer at Finetone records, just prior to
the release of his debut album.

Diljit grew up as the middle child in a modest
family.
His father, Balbir Singh, worked for Punjab
Railways, while his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur,
dedicated her time to caring for the household.
Diljit has an older sister, now residing in the UK,,
and a younger brother, who shares his quiet and
introspecitve nature.

Music Journey & Breakthrough

From a young age, Diljit showed an interest in music.
At just 7 or 8 years old, his love for music began to
emerge. His schoolteacher, Sharmaji, who wrote
kavitas (poems), encouraged Diljit to recite them. He
recognized Dilit’s natural talent, a realization that
ignited his lifelong passion for music.

Soon after, Diljit began formal music training. He
learned to play the tabla at the local Gurdwara under
the guidance of Bhaiji, and also trained in harmonium
and vocals. The tabla proved to be particularly
challenging due to the need for mastering rhythm,
and for a time, Diljit thought he might become a
tabla player. As he progressed, he started singing folk
songs and songs for newcomers, discovering his true
calling.

Diljit’s passion for music remained unwavering. He
prayed earnestly, believing that fame was his destiny.
Despite his dreams, he remained grounded, prepared
to work in a friend’s bicycle factory in Ludhiana if
music did not lead him to success.

Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School

At the age of 10, Diljit was sent to Ludhiana to live with his
mamaji (uncle), a decision made without any prompting. It
marked a pivotal moment in his early life.

He completed his elementary education at Sri Guru
Harkrishan Public School, where his favorite subject was
Punjabi, while math was his least favorite.

After completing his 10th grade at Guru Nanak Mission Public
Senior Secondary School in Nawanshahr Doaba, Punjab, he
made the decision to leave school to focus entirely on music,
spending 1-2 years doing Riaz (practice) and visiting
production companies, where he would sing for them in the
hopes of securing opportunities.

Diljit would often perform Kirtan and devotional songs at local
Gurdwaras, which not only deepened his connection with
music but also with spirituality.

He trained under the guidance of Gobinder Singh Alampuri
and Kartar Singh, both of whom played an instrumental role
in shaping his music abilities and nurturing his raw talent.
