Education and Experience

James is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He spent several years living and working overseas, where he managed an Eco-Lodge in the Northern Region of Malawi and taught English in South Korea before returning to complete his Master of Social Work at the University of North Carolina. James has experience working with clients of all ages in a variety of settings, including hospital emergency departments, schools, group homes, and in-home. His diverse experiences make him one of the more unique male therapists in Raleigh, bringing a distinct and valuable perspective to his clients and the CMHC team.

Completed PrimeCare Health integrated behavioral health program while working with UNC Psychiatric Emergency Services. James has received training in Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), and his current training is focused on ADHD/executive function and ethical practice, among other interests.

James specializes in helping people experiencing anxiety, attentional difficulty, emotional dysregulation, depression, impulsive/risk-taking behaviors, and interpersonal conflict. He enjoys working with couples and individuals of all ages.

Modalities Used

James brings an integrative approach to therapy, combining aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (including Mindfulness), Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing to find the best way forward for each client. His first priority is to collaborate with his clients to create spaces where change feels possible. He is especially attentive to the ideas of reducing stigma surrounding mental health care, trust associated with strict confidentiality, and increasing motivation using strengths and evidence-based techniques.

About the Provider

James enjoys playing basketball, reading (mostly sci-fi!), rock climbing, and listening to far too many podcasts. He dislikes running, though begrudgingly does so most days. James and his wife, young son, and two cats currently split their time between North Carolina, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Pennsylvania.
